Erykah Badu Has a New Side Project for Fashion Week.........While Erykah Badu may not require any help to develop her signature envelope-pushing aesthetic, the announcement today that she’ll be styling Pyer Moss’s Fall 2016 collection is proof she’s certainly open to lending her eye to others. The former Givenchy campaign star is throwing her towering hat into the styling ring this New York Fashion Week, teaming up with the brand’s designer, Kerby Jean-Raymond, for the February 13 show. On the heels of last season’s outing, it’s poised to be a perfect collision of fashion, music, and politics.........For Spring 2016, Jean-Raymond made a bold statement on the runway on the subject of police brutality, visibly weaving the Black Lives Matter movement into his designs. Sending his models down the runway in red paint-splattered footwear that had the appearance of blood while also sheathed in the line’s futuristic streetwear designs, he ignited a conversation about fashion’s involvement with activism. Badu, a vocal Black Lives Matter activist who just premiered her new movie, The Land, at Sundance last week, will undoubtedly bring her own political perspective and wide-ranging, soulful sensibility to the collection. Recently adding a polished menswear-inspired overcoat and top hat to offset the line’s leather shearling-lined overalls, Badu’s stylish caprice balances out Jean-Raymond’s often hard-edged designs. Undoubtedly, their conversation for Fall promises to be an invigorating one.
